1) No it uses PDFJS library to render PDF in real time.
2) Use Single page mode.
PDF files could be very heavy. It is better for best performances to get resized and optimized images from PDF to display images flipbook.

You should optimize the pdf for web to get best performance.
Not everyone is able to optimise PDFs for web. You could add a feature to convert pdfs automatically and create images flipbooks. It is easier and faster for users.
